“A must if you visit St Simons!!” - An absolutely wonderful tour that is worth every penny that you will pay for it. "Captain Rod" will keep you mesmerized with his rich knowledge of the history of the island and his fascinating story-telling skills. So much American history interwoven with personal, heart-warming stories of the people who made history here. I wish I had done it early in my stay here, instead of toward the end of our visit. It made me want to come back and explore more about this beautiful island. The comfortable, air-conditioned trolley ride is a nice break from walking in the weather also! Definitely two thumbs up!!
“Ten Stars!” - Captain Rod is so personable and informative. We called first to ensure wheelchair accessibility since we couldn't see an example of that on the website and that was a factor in us choosing this tour. The William of Orange has an elevator lift that raises the wheelchair and occupant right into the bus. Special wheelchair tie-downs lock the wheelchair into place once loaded onto the bus. We were waiting when "William" pulled into the pickup spot and Captain Rod greeted us like old friends. He stood with us and shared extra tidbits of island info while the 1/2 hour loading time passed. If you want to take the 12 o'clock tour and you suddenly realize it's 12:15pm, no worries...there is a 1/2 hour loading time after the tour start time. So the trolley doesn't actually depart until 12:30pm.
This outfit has been operating for less than one year (as of Dec 2013), but there is nothing "newbie" about them. Rod is very well informed and makes the history of the island come alive. I can't wait to go back to some of the spots he pointed out to us and explore on our own.
As a matter of interest, when I first called Captain Rod, I also asked whether they accepted credit cards. They do. You will incur a very small credit card fee on one of your party's tickets ($3 as of Dec 2013). In other words, a party of four would have a credit card charge of $83 rather than $80 if paid in cash. Well worth the convenience though we were able to access our bank on-island and get cash for no ATM charge.
Thank you Captain Rod for providing an activity that was friendly for all members of our family.
“Interesting island stories!” - Our family loved this! What a neat way to get an overview of the island and know where to spend your time! Learned some interesting info!
“Spring Break” - Family took the tour with capt. Rod and he was very knowledgeable about the history of the Island, very out going and funny, will be back and take his trolley tour again.
“Great knowledge and story telling by Captain Rod” - Don't miss this tour. Captain Rod is very enthusiastic and we were treated like we were his only tour. I don't know how he stays so energized and passionate about his job but he was fantastic! Very knowledgeable of the history and geography of the area. I really enjoyed the trip through the old neighborhood where slave descendants now reside.
